AlignMitts

So if you’re on Ravelry I’m sure you’ve heard of the Star-Crossed Slouchy Beret (Ravelry link), right? Yeah.

Well, it’s pretty much awesome and I, of course, made one for myself. But, I HATED the leftovers. I mean, a chunk of beautiful Malabrigo leftovers sitting there – just begging to be used – I wasn’t having any of  that! I was able to use the remnants for something useful:

AlignMitts (Ravelry link)

You should be able to use just about all (save a few yards!) of the Malabrigo leftovers you have from the Star-Crossed Slouchy Beret to finish these (approx. 100 yds).

Note: Both mitts are worked exactly the same way (left and right mitt are identical) – you will need to shift the cable of the mitt for your left hand to the outside of your hand once completed.

Size: One size fits most

Materials: your Malabrigo Merino Worsted leftovers (my colorway was Cuarzo 97) or any worsted-weight yarn, two circular needles to obtain gauge (I used US 7s), cable needle, piece of worsted-weight scrap yarn of a differing color, darning needle.

Gauge: 4 stitches and 3 rows = 1″

Skills: Long-tail cast on, knitting in the round, knit stitch, purl stitch, cabling, knitting with scrap yarn (to hold stitches), picking up live stitches, picking up stitches

Abbreviations:  k = knit, p = purl, CO = cast on, CN = cable needle, sts = stitches, BO = bind off

Directions – Make 2 of the following:

1. CO 30 sts using the long-tail cast on onto a circular needle.

2. Transfer 15 sts to a second circular needle of the same size and join to work in the round. Place a marker at the beginning of the round.

3. Work 9 even rounds of 1×1 rib (k1, p1).

4. Knit 3 even rounds.

5. K15, place next 3 sts on CN and hold to back. Knit the next three sts on left needle, k3 sts from CN. Knit to end of round.

6. K 4 even rounds.

7. K18, place next 3 sts on CN and hold to front. K3 sts, k3 sts from CN, k6 to end of row.

8. K 4 even rounds, work steps 5-7 one more time.

9. Knit 1 even row (30 rounds completed), break yarn leaving enough of a tail to be woven in later.

10. At beginning of 31st round, knit the first 6 sts with your scrap yarn. Attach your main yarn again and finish the row.

11. Knit 3 rows.

12. Complete step 5 once more.

13. Knit 3 even rounds.

14. Knit 5 rounds of 1×1 rib (k1, p1).

15. BO all sts in pattern (1×1 rib).

16. Using your CN, carefully remove the scrap yarn from the mitt and place the live stitches on your two circular needles (yields 11 live stitches – 6 on bottom, 5 on top).

17. Join your main color yarn, knit across the bottom 6 sts, and pick-up two sts – leaving them on the bottom needle.

18. Using top needle k5, pickup 2 sts and leave them on the top needle (15 total sts).

19. Knit 6 even rounds in 1×1 rib.

20. BO all sts and weave in loose ends.

Enjoy
